Physiologic and Training considerations for clients Diabetes

Chronic metabolic disorder caused by insulin deficiency which impairs carbohydrate usage and enhances usage of fat and protein.

2 Types

Type 1-insulin dependent
Type 2 –non insulin dependent

Most important goals of exercise for individuals with either type of diabetes is glucose control and those with type 2 diabetes-weight loss.

Basic Exercise Guidelines for clients with diabetes

Mode: low impact activities
Frequency: 4–7 days per week
Intensity: 50–90% of maximum heart rate
Duration: 20–60 mins
Assessment: Push, pull, OH squat, single leg balance or single leg squat.
Flexibility: Flexibility continuum.
Resistance: 1–3 sets of 10–15 reps, 2–3 days per week.

Special Considerations
  • Make sure client has appropriate footwear and have client or Dr. check feet for blisters or abnormal wear patterns.
  • Advise client to keep a snack(quick carb) available during exercise to avoid sudden hypoglycemia.
  • Use SMR with special care under Dr. advice.
  • Avoid plyometric and higher intensity training, it is not recommended for typical client.
