Special population physiologic and training considerations

In personal training, special populations include those with disabilities, minors, pregnancy, and the elderly. Special populations often require accommodations for physical differences and abilities. Their bodies may respond in a different manner to exercise. For example, an elderly person with osteoporosis may not have the ability to perform certain exercises the way a normal adult could. The same goes for a minor, where certain movements could be detrimental to their progress.

Special populations must be carefully considered by personal trainers. Training programs generally include some focus on considerations for special populations, as a provider's standard of care involves knowledge of differently abled populations.
